The main quest

Bringing clarity to a shadowed world

and exploring my way through nature and human nature, while adopting essential technologies towards an integrated path.

I’m Jameson. I write code, explore wherever curiosity leads, and head into the woods with a camera. This website is my attempt to bring clarity and illumination to a shadowed world: an attempt, not a finished answer. Here are the side quests I’ve taken on so far, and the main quest they all lead back to.

Made with AI, in the open. How and why

The main quest

Two threads, one path

Everything on this page pulls on one of two threads. The best of it pulls on both.

Thread I · Clarity

Bringing clarity to a shadowed world

Some things stay in shadow because nobody has taken the time to light them. That’s the work I want to do: start with something dense and half hidden, like a map of the psyche or an old contemplative idea, and light it until someone else can find their way through it too.

“One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.”

C. G. Jung, Alchemical Studies
Thread II · Return

Through nature and human nature, adopting essential technologies towards an integrated path

A lot of technology pulls us indoors and inward. I want mine to do the opposite: a car I keep running myself, a bike that carries me deeper into the forest, a camera that makes me stop and look, and software that sends people back out into the world seeing a little more clearly.

“To follow the Way is not to surrender one’s will, but to free it from needless resistance.”

Side quests

Detours that lead back to the path

A side quest is a detour you take because it teaches you something the main road will need. Each of these is my attempt to take a shadowed subject and make it walkable, and each is marked with the threads of the main quest it carries forward.

Side quest INarrated essayAbout 22 minutes aloud

The Tyranny of Representation

Identity, Certainty, and the Contradictions of Modernity

An essay on how religion, science, politics, economics, technology and identity organize reality through representations, and what happens when those representations are mistaken for reality itself. It follows the pattern through knowledge and power, ideology and institutions, and the changing lives of women and young men.

How it serves the main quest

Clarity

It traces how representations made to illuminate reality can come to replace it, and asks us to hold our maps as maps. Seeing a representation as a representation is where clarity starts.

Return

Whatever our systems leave out doesn’t cease to exist; nature rebalances. Reality stays larger than the abstractions we use to control it.

Wu Wei無為

The Art of Effortless Alignment

A narrated contemplation that reads Taoism, Christian mysticism, animism and Jung’s individuation side by side. Listen as each sentence lights up while it’s spoken, or explore the poster one symbol at a time.

How it serves the main quest

Return

Wu wei is acting with the grain of the living world instead of forcing against it, like water finding its course. It’s the posture I want to carry back onto the trail.

Clarity

Shadow work can’t be forced. The essay holds inner opposites in the light long enough to see them, without rushing to resolve them.

Side quest IIIInteractive readingInstallable web app

A Living Syzygy

An interactive reading of a Jungian map of the psyche. Logos and Eros meet as a living syzygy under the Self, Mythos bridges the collective unconscious and conscious life, and Hecate, Thanatos and Persephone stand between Mythos and the Shadow.

How it serves the main quest

Clarity

It takes a crowded map of the psyche, the Shadow included, and lets you walk it one region at a time, tracing each idea back through the sources Jung read and the writers who carried it on.

Return

Its Instinct region treats our embodied nature as something to bring into conscious relationship, neither obeyed blindly nor repressed. Coming back to nature starts there.

Inside

  • A guided tour of the poster, region by region
  • A depth view that redraws the map in Jung’s own terms
  • A timeline of Jung’s sources, and parallels he never saw
  • A library of modern takes, research and critique

Off the clock

Between the workshop and the trail

Most of what I love sits somewhere on this line. The middle is where technology earns its place: when it carries you further into the living world instead of away from it.

  1. Building computers

A machine I put together myself.

  2. Fixing my car

Keeping my own wheels running, so they keep getting me out there.

How this page was made

Made with AI, in the open

This website is my attempt to bring clarity and illumination to a shadowed world, and I’m using AI to build it, and to gather my interests and present them. I would rather say so plainly: a page about bringing light into shadow shouldn’t keep its own making in the dark.

What AI did

Claude, made by Anthropic, and ChatGPT, made by OpenAI

  • Claude wrote the code and the design of this site.
  • Claude drafted most of the words here, in my voice.
  • Claude gathered my interests and arranged them into quests.
  • Claude turned my essays into narrated pages, and refined my wording where I asked it to.
  • Claude looked through more than 1,700 of my photos, chose 240 sharp ones of nature from 63 days, and titled and captioned them.
  • ChatGPT generated the posters for the side quests.

What’s mine

Where it all comes from

  • The photographs.
  • The interests, and the two ambitions at the heart of the page.
  • The direction: every correction, and the final say on what stays.
